Happy Fall Ya’ll! I have been counting down the days to November because I have been so eager to write about this women empowerment song! November is finally here!
My women empowerment song selection for November is “Queendom” by Norwegian singer and producer, Aurora. It is the first track off of her 2018 album entitled “Infections of a Different Kind.” This song is an upbeat anthem about women supporting women “til Queendom come.” And I have to be honest, I am not a person who has ever gotten really emotional about pop music before. However, the first time I heard this song, I cried. I was legitimately weeping by myself in my car.
Earlier that day, I had been doing research for another blog post. I learned about how ancient Neolithic cultures were actually women centered. There were once REAL Queendoms. Villages called themselves “motherhoods”. Women held the majority of all leadership roles. They were oracles, land owners, and healers. The men highly respected women and followed their authority because they saw women as bridges between the earth and the divine realm.
But That All Changed
But that all changed with the rise of the Christian Inquisition in the 14th century. It started when “witchcraft”, which included all of the ancient mystical and healing arts that had been practiced exclusively by women for centuries, was deemed a crime punishable by death. Thus began a wave of genocide across Europe, a 400 year period of time where an estimated 9 million women were tortured and killed. Because of this, human societies across the globe shifted from benevolent matriarchies to violent, dominating patriarchies. We are still feeling the ripple effects of this traumatic wound in human history to this day.
Fast Forward
Fast forward a few hundred of years to me driving to the grocery store, engrossed in one of the most cathartic cries of my life, while listening to this very moving and incredibly catchy pop song. I was experiencing so many emotions at once. Being mostly mixed European descent, I was awash with the grief and pain of my women ancestors.
But at the same time I was also flooded with hopefulness and gratitude. A deep gratitude for being alive at this exact point in history. Hundreds of years after the Christian Inquisition, we are -right now- finally starting to see a major shift again in human culture. We see it in the women’s rights movements and #Metoo movements that continue to progress worldwide. We see it in the revived awareness of divine feminine power coming back to humanity. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, women are beginning to emerge from this long, dark period of oppression to once again light the way for the future of our planet. I am so immensely thankful that we are alive during this pivotal time in history.
“Queendom” represents our rising. The lyrics express a commitment to support and uplift women “till Queendom come.” This song could not have existed even 100 short years ago. But it exists now. The official music video has over 8 million views on youtube. What a wonderful sign of the changing tides.
TILL QUEENDOM COME!
